Milk filter socks and sleeves

Single-use non-woven milk filter socks and sleeves, 24 inch and 36 inch, with a sewn or a bonded seam. Sold by the case of 100.

The sock goes on the filter holder between the receiver and the plate cooler or tank, and every drop of milk from the parlour goes through it. It catches hair, bedding and the odd clot. It is also the cheapest mastitis check you own. Pull the sock after milking, open it out on a clean surface and look. Flakes or clots in it mean a cow is milking abnormal milk into the tank, and the sock tells you before the bulk tank somatic cell count does.

Length follows the holder. A 24-inch sock on a 36-inch holder leaves bare wire and milk bypasses. A 36-inch sock on a short holder bunches and tears at the fold. Seam matters less than people think: sewn seams are a little stronger under high flow, bonded seams leave no needle holes. We carry both and will tell you which your holder was made for if you send its length and diameter.

Change the sock at every milking. A sock left on through two milkings is filtering the second through what it caught in the first.

In-line strainers and screens

In-line strainers with a 304 stainless body and tri-clamp ends, taking a cylindrical screen in 40, 60, 80 or 100 mesh. Sold per unit, with screens also sold on their own.

An in-line strainer is not a filter sock. It sits where a sock can't: on a pump suction, ahead of a plate cooler, on a transfer line to a vat. It catches the lump that would chew an impeller or block a plate channel, and it gets washed and put back rather than thrown away. Too fine a screen on a pump suction starves the pump and it cavitates. Too coarse and the plate cooler slowly clogs.

We ask where it goes and what flows through it. Raw milk ahead of a cooler usually takes 60 or 80 mesh. A pump suction wants 40. Whey and brine in a cheese room are a different conversation. Replace a screen the day you find a split along its seam, because a strainer with a split screen strains nothing and still looks fine from outside.
