Tri-clamp gaskets

Most tri-clamp leaks we see are a 1.5-inch gasket on a 2-inch ferrule. The clamp closes. It still weeps. That happens because people order by the pipe, and on a sanitary line the pipe size and the ferrule flange are two different numbers, so the desk asks for the flange outside diameter measured across the face with calipers and sizes the gasket from that.

We keep four compounds. Black EPDM is the default for milk, hot water and the usual alkaline and acid CIP cycle, and it is what goes on most parlour and milk-room joints. Translucent silicone handles dry heat and fatty product well but does not like repeated steam. Brown Viton is for oils, solvents and some aggressive sanitisers. White PTFE is near-inert and takes heat, but it does not spring back, so it wants a tight clamp and a clean ferrule face.

Buy them in a box of 25 and keep them in the dark. A gasket that has been clamped once has already taken its set. We don't sell used rubber, and a gasket off a joint you just opened should go in the bin, not back in the drawer.

Plate heat exchanger gaskets

Plate heat exchanger gaskets for dairy plate coolers, pasteuriser sections and small cheese-room heaters, in clip-in and glued styles, cross-referenced by plate pattern.

A plate cooler that starts to cross-leak shows up as water in the milk or milk in the well water, and either one is a phone call you don't want from the plant. The gasket is usually the reason. The plate is usually fine.

We match PHE gaskets by the plate, not by the frame's badge. Lay one plate flat, put a tape measure across it and photograph it square on. Send that with the overall length and width, the port diameter, the plate count and whether the old gaskets clip in or are glued. Clip-in gaskets snap into the groove with lugs through the plate edge and go on at the bench in minutes. Glued gaskets need the groove stripped and a cure time, and the job takes a day if you do it right.

Re-gasket a whole section at once. Mixing a new gasket with its neighbours that have ten years of compression set leaves the new one carrying the whole load, and it leaks within the season.

If a gasket comes off swollen, sticky or cracked at the bead after a few weeks, the material is wrong for the chemical, not faulty. Tell us what your CIP detergent is and at what temperature it runs.

Before you ask

What buyers ask about gaskets

Can I order tri-clamp gaskets by pipe size?

Tell us the ferrule, not the pipe. Measure the flange outside diameter across the ferrule face with calipers and send that number. A 2-inch ferrule measures about 2.516 inches across the flange. If you only have a ruler, give us millimetres and we will work it out.

Why does Viton cost so much more than EPDM?

The raw compound costs more and the gaskets are made in smaller runs. In the estimator Viton carries a 3.2 times multiplier over EPDM. Most dairy lines do not need it, and we will say so if you ask for it on a plain milk line.

Do you match plate heat exchanger gaskets from a photo?

From a photo with a tape measure in frame, the plate's overall length and width, the port diameter and the plate count, yes. From a colour or a rough description, no. The wrong set costs you a day with the frame open and the cooler out of service.

Is the gasket price band what I pay?

No. The band is indicative. The desk gives you a firm price once it knows what you actually have, and freight and any sales tax go on top.
